So I went to Toronto and looked at the charts, and then went to London to work on Lou Reed's Berlin album. AD: I left school when I was 15, and immediately formed a trio with a sax player and a keyboard player. 'Oh no, this is not for me, I went home, and the next after noon John Mayall called me up and said, "I was sitting in the audience last night and I was wondering if you'd come down and sit in with my band." They wanted to get on the road, and I said Well, lets just get the video done. So we got the When You Love A Woman video doneI was packing my whole left side in ice between takes. Those songs, and those tracks. So at the end of that conversation, I said Look, you go call whatever you wanna do with whomever youve checked out something else. I was also looking after Jeff as far as that was concerned. I just dont wanna be in the band anymore. Nobody knew, yknow? Never go as a musician because it doesn't work. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." Yeah. I was a Journeyman. I dont know. By the time you damp a larger drum, you'll end up with a 20" head anyway. Emotionally. They were one of the top bands in England at that time. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. We were ready to go and rehearse and do the first video, and I was on a ten-day break before we started rehearsals. He goes to a restaurant, he goes through the little jukebox at the table, they go through the thing, he goes through Heart, and then he ends up with Tony Bennett, and he reaches in, puts a quarter in and pushes a button, and you think hes gonna play Tony Bennetthes a wiseguy, hes either gonna play some rock and roll or Tony Bennett, that was how they threw the scent off. And Id always wanted to do a record with him, because I just loved his musicalityI loved the fact that he played like a wicked guitar player, and was always curious what Id sound like playing with him. I sing with a microphone and a music stand. It wasn't like, "Well, I've played every- thing 1 want to play, so now. Cause we didnt sound alike. And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. The moment a singer gets one callus, hes finished. Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. And Ive played some of the stuff for friends, and for some people that arent afraid to tell me the truth. If somebody said anything to me, I'd blow up, because my nerves were shattered from being in a complete state of exhaustion. He was in another band, at that point, and apparently they were getting ready to get signed, and his bass player was in an awful car crash and died. And our bass player Richard Michaels got killed in a Fourth of July holiday accident on the freeway. GQ: Journey had already made three records by the time you joined the band. It's something I was thinking about, but it is to the point where it sounds like everybody's done it all with what's there. RM: In America, a musician usually has to go to New York or LA .to make it. Then I finally got lessons when I was about 13. Anything worth anything has got to be that way. . I had to spend some time doing something which didn't take too much mental thought-something I could just have fun with. Electronically, you have to be careful with that because you've got electronic components in there that are going to get smashed if you hit them too hard. AD: I workout for about an hour before I play, going through a lot of rudiments and practicing coordination between my hands and feet. But I didnt see it until the first time it aired, that Sunday night. So in retrospect [laughs] maybe it wasnt the smartest thing I ever did, because he went, Well, Neals doin one, why cant I do one? And everybodys goin, Well, Neals not doin anything thats gonna conflict with Journey, yknow? So Columbia was pushing Journey to write more commercial music? He offered me the gig with him at 20 pounds a week, which at that point, was like 60 bucks. And theres been some that I wasnt too pleased about, but my feet had been held to the fire, slightly, so I had to. Because if you do, you will fracture the stone. I got these ProTools sketches of songs, and I guess its time to record some of em. I was always on the edge of being what I expected out of myself, and what people wanted me to be, and I never wanted to settle for anything short of what it should be. It would really slow me down." **Do you think you made bad decisions in terms of how you handled things with the band? Can you unpack that for me a little bit? And no contracts were really binding me to have to be or do anything anymore. So John said, "Well, we've got a gig tomorrow night. So Im really excited about getting out there and just being completely in control of whats going on, for real. Yeah., He knows he wasnt the only drummer considered for the role but he was surprised when Bruce Kulick later told him that one of his heroes, Aynsley Dunbar, had been auditioned and then ruled out. Sure enough, I was playing a gig and they just popped in and said, we're looking for a drummer and we'd like to know if you would like to move to Lon- don and join us." So I went to this club and we chatted about me coming over and joining his band, but 1 couldn't give an answer because l wasn't sure if I wanted to disband my group. But when I went through Liverpool on a tour with Zappa in 1971, out of all the people I knew in Liverpool, he was the only one who actually turned up backstage to shake my hand and say how well I was playing. I just dont hang out in that environment anymore. Then I had trouble with Bowie 's management. If you go back to that, what are you going back to now? So thats why I said, Maybe we really are done. Id left to find my life, once before, gone back to it, to try to reclaim something we once had, and then we kinda fell into that same place again. I sing with myself all the time I'm playing. RM: I noticed you using traditional grip at times. Just lettin the wind kinda blow through me, and just trying to figure a little bit out, how much of me is in there, still, as opposed to what I became? Id had some pain in my left hip area before, but I didnt think nothin about it cause it would come and go. Thats an interesting comment. Hearing the music rather than counting it is always the best way. [laughs] I think I needed some time off, what do you think? After you've been around a while, you understand that you can't play everything you've ever wanted to play. I remember that tour, the Raised on Radio tour. They thought that because we had got to the point where we were selling out everywhere and making quite a bit of money, that we had reached stardom. On one song he gave me a chart that was all marching-type drumming-roll after roll, flams, drags, ruffs-and it was great. Its like I saidI didnt crack the stone. So its always a fine, artful dance. And we wrote the record. All these years, its funnyI never really felt part of it. What they took out, edit-wise, was that[long pause] I gotta think about how to say this. And he was playin, I think, nine Journey songs and three of his original songs. Its been painful. We hadnt finished the second leg of the tour. But I didnt. The traditional grip is more complicated, but it's easier for me to play. And so everybody packed their stuff, went home, and Im hearing that were gonna be off for maybe a couple months, three months, six months, whateverbut it turned out to be close to eight to ten years. We mastered the record. She would be on one side of the stage with the orchestra, and I would be on the other, so there was a gap between us. RM: Do you have a set of pads in your dressing room? It just completely slays me. It could be east of Vine. Okay. From all of it. And he was there for a brief time, until Herbie heard my tape and convinced them that they were gonna have to move from him to me. His exact words were, Youre some big shoes to fill, but we wanna get out there. Eventually I got bored with the screeching sound of the violin. And you can only run on the road and be in front of people so long before it doesnt fix you enough, to where you can run away from things you havent addressed. Even while I was doing the solo album, even after it was successfulin my heart of hearts, I was never gonna leave Journey. Some of em, I think the answer is yes. AD: There's always the chance. Is it just that people can relate to the sentiment in that song? They were certainly amenable to it when I joined them. If you play the bass and snare at the same time, you 'llfind that the snare drum sound disappears. He was a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, along with Peter Green & John McVie who would form Fleetwood Mac. He's great at all of the percussion things. We can all play crush rolls around the drum kit, and play every note possible in a drum fill, but it will just sound like mush to the average person. When I was with Zappa, I wanted to learn to play vibes, and I wanted to be able to read faster, so I took some les- sons from Mitchell Peters, who is with the L.A. Philharmonic. Everybodys gone on to their own incarnations, and everybodys had success, but the truth is, there was a synergy that the band had, in the chemistry of writing and performing and arguing and recording, yknow? But at the same time, the difference between a voice and fingers, or hands, is neurotic at best. Now, have I perjured myself? I like having a click track to work with, but I don't just play along with it for hours. I looked around and realized that my whole life had become everything Id worked so hard to be, and when I came back to have a regular life, I had to go find one. RM: You also did the movie 200 Motels with Ringo and Keith Moon. Like I said, using it can cause the problem. I love playing. As soon as I went backstage after the Berkeley concert, the crew and band told me that Aynsley and Terry were there hanging out. Ive read three reviews in my entire career, and they were all so painful that I decided not to read em anymore. He was the drummer for eleven Frank Zappa albums. Most of them get bored by it.
