Temperatures have finally started dropping with cooler weather setting in. Lots of water cover has probably spread out the fish. The state is funding the effort as part of the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative. I little color to the water at dawn and just after a pair of reasonably fresh males come to the net for the Licorice Man. Flows in Johnson Creek for sure up and even stained from a pretty good shot of water. There was another couple inches of wet snow and something like a 0.25 inch of rain thru last night. Thanks to Ernsts and NYSDEC and hatchery personnel and the receiving party getting the fish to this point. Water visibility was about 6-foot at the time. Forecast is for precipitation again Wednesday and a chance of showers thru the end of the week. Water color has improved to about 1 plus feet of viz. Water color is one foot of visibility or less. Try to anticipate dropping and clearing flows and be on the water when reasonable conditions come together! FREE boat launching until the Spring! Im hearing of a few hook ups each outing for most guys, and those anglers report putting in the time and working for the hook ups by covering different water with swings or dead drifts. Less noticeable will be in Sandy since Canal flows there are throttling up. The other area smaller tribs are prob going to try and open back up from previous icing with high and dirty flows. Any significant precipitation could raise all the trib flows back high and dirty. Most hook up chances will come from long and light float presentations at the dam. Not surprising since it was a real gloomy overcast wet kind of day that you would expect good fish movement. No accumulations expected here on the WNY Lake Ontario Plain. Avoid close contact, such as shaking hands, hugging, and kissing. Not a blow out but enough precipitation to bump everything up with a nice spate of water for some fresh fish migrations. Deep and slow drifts and swings are rewarded with hard fighting fresh steelhead. Sandy Creek has been the most consistent brown trout action so thats where most of the fishing pressure has been. Cormorant numbers, however, remain a significant challenge to all the Lake wide salmonid stocking efforts. As soon as the levels come down more trout will show up. To the east at Sandy Creek flows are reported to be medium or just a notch greater. They consulted with, At last! Blown flows typically come from the overflow channel. (There will be no fees for the 2021 canal boating season.) Stay tuned! Note to self after any kind of high water after stale conditions try more upstream then downstream. Fishing pressure is light all around and no significant icing conditions are hindering drifting chances. Suckers were more numerous too. Even though I wouldnt look for turbine flows to change much in the near term, once the water temps begin to rise even a little the drift chances should improve and more fresh fish will hopefully be evidenced all around. Flows will likely retreat in the overflow channel thru the mid and end part of the week while turbine flows remain high. The working mans big trout and salmon trip is still here, and its not even a contest compared to the other exotic, far off angling destinations. Mid Mar 2022 Oak Orchard. Recent frontal winds and rain have several salmon spots set up. On the south end of Newark has been a great place for catching bass. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. Other area smaller tribs are dropping back toward low and clear and warming thru this week. info@orleanscountytourism.com When flows are reduced temporarily, it reveals pretty good numbers of fish. Now some silver browns hooked up too, as has been the case on the smaller tribs like to the east. The better reports I hear are from guys that have some Kings migrate past them or hold and they get some drifts to them. Look for the loitering downstream fish to continue to move up making for better upstream action. Weather and the calendar is the biggest factor for angling pressure and bringing more fishermen out or keeping them indoors. Real nice flows by steelhead standards. Same for estuary slow water areas on the smaller tribs where guys have had on and off action. Look for mod and mostly clear flows in the Oak and low and clear flows in the other area smaller waterways. Keep informed about 2021 canal hours. Today it was mostly sunny and 53. I for one am glad for some consistent winter weather to at least reset seasonal conditions after the mild fall. Slightly high and stained flows make for good drifting chances after all the high and dirty. Early Sep 2017. And along with the browns theres the chance for Atlantics, cohos or steelhead rounding out nice mixed bag chances. Flows in the Oak are high, close to blown and dirty. Chance of only rain showers with temps approaching 50F+ on select days. Flows in the Oak are high and stained with about 1 foot of visibility. Water color has that swamp headwater tannic stain to it. One guy catches a fish, another guy quick runs the fish over to the turbine channel cradled in a net. New Fall Fishing Program. Over all though, the brown trout action on the Oak is tough. Other area smaller tribs should be retreating toward medium or lower to moderate and slightly stained. Through Operation Injured Soldiers, Captains Mike Grager, Mike Lavender and Bob Eder took 12 wounded veterans fishing and enjoyed 2 days on Lake Ontario. The rest of the Oak, like after the confluence, were high water fishable by at least this past Sunday thru about yesterday as the overflow levels diminished. In the Steelhead Division, Karen Mang of East Concord, NY is top fish catcher with a 16-pound, 12-ounce Olcott fish. Eggs, egg sacs and beads are working to take salmon, brown trout and the occasional steelhead. I have been fishing my clients from 50-150 ft. After the extremely high water we have had the last two weeks it is finally receded enough to produce safer wading conditions. No doubt as flows drop and clear even a little guys should get onto more fish, especially brown trout. 3 spinners to catch a fair number of smallmouth bass earlier this week. One note: the spiny water flea bloom is in progress so rig your rods with 30-50# mono on riggers and be prepared to check rods often. We are surely going to have water for high and off color flows when the weather breaks toward spring. Look for post spawn browns to be redistributed thru the waterways and the chance for some fresher steelhead. With these colder temps the fish are reasonably hardy, they wont be later on. Get the drift or swing down and checked and slowed a bit and you can find a head shaking steelhead on the take. The expectations were high as the last trip out we had a good number of silver fish. Keep informed from the NYS Canal web for changes and restrictions with canal waters. They started in 60 feet of water trolling northwest with cut bait and the reel started screaming. So far a nice start to the action, forecast looking mostly dry and seasonably cool right thru the upcoming weekend. Good action reported, consistent from most anglers on the Oak thru the past end of weekend and yesterday. So when even a reasonable high and stained water window presents itself, that may be the best time to fish. For now temps are in the high 30s F and falling short of the predicted near 50 F. Thankful for that continued Erie Canal water feed for select tribs as the forecasted precipitation at this time not likely to cause a big change in trib flows. Well probably continue to see a drawn out salmon run. Theres not a lot of fish spawning or even many zombies yet so that tells you things are progressing slowly. Fishing pressure, no doubt, is light though. I would doubt we are heading toward any kind of blow out, but a little stain to the water would sure be a good thing too. Try to keep at least six (6) feet of distance between you and others. Saturday afternoon we fished 150-200 in water a few miles west of Port. So if youre following this the moral of the story is that the weather is up and down and therefore so are the water levels and fishable conditions. Lower Niagara River action picked up a tick or two this week for bass and walleye according to Lisa Drabczyk with Creek Road Bait and Tackle in Lewiston. On the dates not included above anglers can still fish any of the water adjacent to the Archers Club but access will have to be by walking and wading from downstream at the Park Ave Ext Fishing Trail or from upstream at the Waterport dam and anglers cannot be on the Archers Club grounds only in the immediate bankside water. Still lots of water in the Oak at slightly high and slightly stained with about 2 ft of visibility. If those times won't work for you, 12:00AM to 12:00AM looks promising , as does 12:00AM to 12:00AM Remember to adjust these times based on barometric pressure, and weather changes. Just prior to the lowering of flows, guys reported steelhead hook ups at the dam and overflow pools and scattered downstream thru the fast water gravel stretches for spawning fish. For now that is, until any more bigger rains or snows may come. It looks like some of the weather we missed out on thru the earlier winter is coming now in the later winter. Still hanging on to warm (hot) weather but theres a change afoot in the forecast with chance of significant rain mid week and a cool down. Its all about water flows Water flows are the single biggest factor in encouraging upstream movements of fish during the fall, winter and spring trib seasons. Not sure if we are even going to see the typical influx of trout guys those crowds are already tardy not unlike the trout and salmon migrations. Any future precipitation could raise flows and bring back dirty water color. Upcoming weekend warm up should keep things open and we might be looking at some more serious icing and retreating flows after that for next week. If you want to help for salmon we can direct you to the contacts for that effort. Fishing out deep has been hit and miss and no real pattern of lures to speak of. Some reports of stained water color to the east which could be a result of Canal drainage. Any significant rainfall could raise flows up more with dirtier water color. This is kind of a reset (at least when it warms back up) and with a return to some more inviting flows and stained water there should be new migrations of spring fish. Colder temps could bring back some icing conditions esp in the smaller waterways if lower flows prevail. No parking will be allowed at anytime on the road at the top of the driveway and therefore no walk in access down the driveway. Darker and some old moldy salmon are still around. Some forecasted showers that for once turned into more like rainstorms yesterday and today have brought along that nice gloom for fish migrations, but probably will not change any trib flows much. All the trib flows are on the rise and going off color. A couple of days of cold weather earlier this week probably hastened the retreating flows. So we are still in this mostly mild winter pattern. A couple anglers reported when flows came down thanks to turbine rack cleaning it revealed strong numbers of browns and some steelhead nearer the dam, even if they hadnt been good biters prior. Light fishing pressure with just a few cars seen at the two access points. The canal season for navigation ended October 13th and some sections are being lowered. Considering that January is usually a bit of an in-between time frame after the fall salmon/brown trout action and before spring steelhead, the few guys out taking advantage of the weather and flows are doing pretty good. Spoons are UV Mags, green. Any significant precipitation could bring flows quickly back up and off color. Weather is seasonable warm today and then forecast winter cold with wind for tomorrow and weekend. Fish are still spawning in the typical areas on or near gravel. Next chance at snow for area wide is for the beginning part of next week. Flows will likely just open up minus any blow out, as long as there is no significant precipitation. Everything is wide open to fish and its going to take a cold snap to get things iced back up again. Check out loc.org. Lots of optimism for trib season chances ahead on good returns from the steelhead pen rearing renewed project since 2019. Now quietly too a few guys are reporting better action. Wind has subsided and we are on the backside of 3/4 1 inch of rain. Guys may wind up on the Oak after finding icing conditions otherwise. Where I looked anyway it looks like most if not all the icing is gone away, so not expecting any significant upstream fast water sections to be iced in. Chance of rain and colder temps and windy conditions for the end of the week but back to relatively mild temps again by the weekend.
